Maxine Cleo Barnes-Frey's Obituary
Maxine "Cleo" Barnes-Frey, 92 of Traverse City passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Cherryhill Haven, III.
She was born to the late Charles N. Barnes, of Ohio, and Vivian (Humphrey) Barnes of Michigan on April 17, 1921 at Deaconess Hospital in Detroit, MI. Maxine graduated from Detroit's Southwestern High School in 1939.
Maxine married the late Robert Elrod in 1941. They lived together in Grosse Pointe, MI, before relocating to Alden, MI in 1984.
During the War, Maxine worked at the U.S. Rubber Company. After raising two children she managed several retail clothing stores. Her favorite store that she worked at was in Downtown Rochester, operated by her son-in-law, Jere, and Patti her daughter. She loved picking out wardrobes for the male customers and being in and around the water. Most of all she truly loved her family.
On October 9, 1988 she married the late Richard W. Frey.
Maxine was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City, MI. For the past year she enjoyed living at Cherryhill Haven in Traverse City.
Surviving Maxine is her daughter, Patti (Jere Hodges ) Elrod-Hodges of Chesterfield, MI., son-in-law Paul von Allmen, her sister Sharron (Bob Rusky) Barnes-Claire, of Ohio; grandchildren Kelly (Mason) Cudnohufsky, Todd Cudnohufsky, Patrick Mason, Chris (Laura) von Allmen, Taylor (fiance Michael Lockwood ) von Allmen, Amy Hodges Danna, Brad Danna, Jason Hodges, 11 great grandchildren, step children, Robert W. Frey of Classen, MI, William R. (Candace) Frey of Virginia, VA, Thomas R. (Sharon Char-Frey) Frey of Bellaire, Joan Hope (Ernest Long) Frey-Long, of Prudenville, Elizabeth (James Mix) Frey-Mix of Oxford, MI, 13 step grandchildren, and 18 step great grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husbands Robert and Richard, and daughter Cheri Elrod-von Allmen.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to Hospice of Michigan.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 1:00pm with a visitation held one hour prior at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City.
