Melissa Doane Matthews, 82, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Meadow Valley Assisted Living in Traverse City, Michigan.

Melissa was born on November 23, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Clark and Marjory (Swan) Matthews. She graduated from Birmingham High School and went on to attend Oakland University, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Education.

Melissa dedicated her career to teaching grade school in Lake Orion Schools, retiring in 2003 after many years of devoted service. She was beloved by her students for her creativity and her fun-loving approach to teaching. Melissa had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around her.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing laughter and meaningful conversations over meals. Melissa also had a deep love for animals, a passion that remained close to her heart throughout her life.

Melissa is survived by her two sisters, Jill Whelan and Hannah Matthews, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Matt Matthews; and her sister, Linda (Matthews) Leonard.

Melissa’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kathy Stoddard, a dear friend and caregiver, for her love, care, and compassion over the years.

A celebration of Melissa’s life will be held this summer.
