Melvin Duane Sutfin

Traverse City - Melvin Duane Sutfin, 75, of Traverse City passed away January 10, 2014 at Munson Medical Center.

Melvin was born on April 25, 1938 to Eugene and Dortha (Maneval) Sutfin in Petoskey.

Melvin honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army.

On May 13, 1961 Melvin married Betty Hopper in Epsilon.

For 34 years Melvin was employed by the Lear Corporation where he was a tool and dye maker, machinist and repairman. Following his retirement in 2003 his family surprised him with a wonderful celebration.

In his spare time Melvin loved to sail. He also enjoyed listening to music and played several instruments including the harmonica and guitar. Melvin also liked to sing in the church choir. He and Betty were devout members of the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church for many years.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty, and their children Randy (Cindy) Sutfin of New Orleans, LA, and Carol (Phillip) Popa of Chicago, IL, grandchildren Joshua Sutfin, Brandon Sutfin and Allyson Popa, brother LeRoy (Martha) Sutfin of Petoskey, sister-in-law Rose Sutfin and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and brother Carl.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 3 until 8 pm. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 11:00 am at Traverse Bay United Methodist Church with vistation held one hour prior. A luncheon will be held at Bay View Wesleyn Church following the service.

Graveside services where Melvin will receive full military honors will take place at Curtiss Cemetery east of Petoskey in the spring.

Memorial contributions in honor of Melvin may be directed to Traverse Bay United Methodist Church or Epsilon United Methodist Church.
