TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN - Michael Shawn Barry, D.O., 62, of Traverse City, died July 16, 2014, at his home.
He was born March 26, 1952, the son of William Barry, Jr. and Lillyan M. (Hemming) Barry. The family lived in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he graduated from Lake Michigan Catholic High School in 1970. He was a graduate of Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1974. He obtained his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University in 1979. Dr. Barry completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Detroit Osteopathic Hospital System in SE Lower Michigan in 1983.
While attending Michigan State University, he met Linda Diane Bair. They were married on October 1, 1983, and moved to Traverse City, Michigan, where they raised three children.
Following his move to Traverse City in 1983, Dr. Barry practiced internal medicine at Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital continuing his practice there until the hospital's closure in April, 1995. He subsequently practiced at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, and was a founding member of the Hospitalist Group at Munson.
Dr. Barry and his colleague, Sara Roth, began Patient Care Specialists, a hospitalist consulting practice, at Munson Medical Center in March of 2009. Even after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) on Feb. 4, 2011, Dr. Barry continued in this practice until Oct., 2011. During his tenure at Munson Medical Center, he served on the Medical Ethics Committee and in the Residents' Training program. Dr. Barry was awarded the Teacher of the Year award (2011) for his dedicated service in the education of residents and internal medicine students, especially in EKG interpretation.
Dr. Barry's hobbies included jogging, biking, reading, brewing beer with his many friends, acting as a sounding board for his adult children and giving generously of his time and medical expertise to family and friends. His energy and optimism, his lessons on medicine and life, all had a lasting impression on everyone he knew. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City, Michigan.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; two daughters, Rachel Lauren (Lindsay) Atkins of Chicago, Illinois, and Sarah Ashley Barry of Traverse City; and a son, Shawn Michael Barry of Traverse City. Dr. Barry is also survived by one sister, Patricia Ann (William) Lint of Saugatuck, Michigan, and one brother, John Edward (Terry) Barry of Orange, Connecticut. His family felt his ongoing love and support always.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, July 20 ,2014 from 2PM -5PM with a Vigil service to follow at 5:00 PM at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at the new St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 12675 Center Road, Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City,on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the fund for the new Science and Health Education Facility at Aquinas College, 1607 Robinson Road, S.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49506. Attn: Patricia Castiglioni, Advancement Office.
