The world lost a remarkable man on August 3, 2026, when Michael Robert Smith passed away peacefully with his wife, Ronnie, holding his hand. Born on August 16, 1947, Michael lived a life filled with purpose, loyalty, and heart.
At just 20 years old, Michael answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Army in 1967. He quickly rose to Sergeant and bravely served in the Vietnam War. His service shaped him — not only as a soldier, but as a leader, a mentor, and a man who believed deeply in standing up for others.
After returning home, Michael began a 34‑year career with the Grand Trunk Railroad, where he built friendships, earned respect, and became known for his steady presence and dedication. His commitment to veterans never faded; he proudly served as VFW District 13 Commander and VFW Post 2780 Commander, roles that allowed him to continue giving back to the community he loved.
Michael’s greatest joy came from his family. He loved gatherings big and small, cherished every moment with his children, and absolutely adored his grandchildren. To them, he was a hero, a storyteller, and a source of endless affection.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Smith, and his brothers Thomas and Patrick.
Michael leaves behind his beloved wife Ronnie; children Tricia, Michael Jon, and Carrie (Jason); step‑sons Ricky (Jenna) Dalzell and Jarrett Hubert; and grandchildren Kross, Keaton, Xander, Brelyn, Keira, Peyton, and Brynlee, Brothers Mark Smith, David Smith, and Paul (Diane) Smith, and Sisters Mary (Chuck) Kato and Margaret (Terry) Aune;
Michael’s legacy is one of service, strength, and love — a life lived fully and generously. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
