TRAVERSE CITY — Miles B. Gilmore, 91, of Traverse City, passed away Sept. 16, 2011, at Munson Hospice House. Miles was born on May 19, 1920, to Miles and Bertha (Marshall) Gilmore, on Old Mission Peninsula. In 1942, Miles answered the call of duty and joined the United States Armed Forces. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. On May 1, 1948, Miles married the former Ruth M. Van Maren. Together they shared 63 years of marriage. In 1979, Miles retired from Michigan Bell after 41 years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneer Club, the VFW and the American Legion. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. Miles was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nellie Archer; and brother, Marshall. Miles is survived by his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Denise (Timothy) Neason; son, Bryce (Ursula Kay) Gilmore; son, Craig Gilmore; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Visitation for Miles will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the First Congregational Church. The funeral will also be held at the church on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, where VFW Post #2780 will provide military honors for their late comrade.
