Miriam Longcore

February 4, 1938 — January 4, 2024

Miriam Tracy Longcore, 85, of Traverse City, passed away, peacefully on January 4, 2024.

Mim was born on February 4, 1938 in Flint, Michigan. She moved with her family to Cleveland, Ohio when she was nine years old.

After graduating from Bay Village High School, Mim attended Michigan State University, where she made many friends and earned a degree in early childhood education. She completed her student teaching at Eastern Elementary School in 1960. During her time in Traverse City, she met the love of her life, Jim.

On November 24, 1962, Mim and Jim got married. They moved to the Upper Peninsula for two years, where Mim taught the second grade in Marquette. After settling back in Traverse City, they had one daughter, Karen.

She worked for many years, at Arnell Engstrom School at the State Hospital, before moving on to her dream job. She founded and was the director of Small World Pre-School located at the Presbyterian Church. Mim loved spending time with her students and encouraging them to do their best at whatever they were doing. She believed in every one of them. She retired in 1992 after 30 years of teaching. During her retirement she and Jim travelled to Europe, Florida and Arizona.

Mim was an avid reader and always enjoyed learning about new things. She was a fabulous cook and loved creating delicious comfort food for friends and family.

Mim was a season ticket holder of MSU football tickets and spent many Saturdays at the Spartan Stadium cheering her team on…she also loved a fun tailgate with good beer!

When she had free time, Mim loved anything and everything that involved her four grandchildren, Nick, Keanen, Josh and Mary. Especially, volunteering in their classrooms at Old Mission School, where she touched many lives.

Mim is survived by her daughter, Karen (Steve) Armour; grandchildren Nicholas, Keanen (Courtney Tononi), Joshua and Mary; brother in-law Gary Longcore (Ellen), sisters in-law Lorraine (Richard) Hominga, Barbara Grosmark, Sally Viskochil, and Diane Longcore; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her sister Mary Louise Herthneck, her brothers in-law Robert Longcore, David Viskochil and Jay Grosmark and sister in-law Marilyn Longcore Schneider and her husband Bob Schneider.

Mim will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to so many. Such a positive attitude. Her sense of humor kept people laughing and wanting to spend more time with her.

A celebration of Mim's life will take place in the summer.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Kuhn, the French Manor Terra staff and Joni Grigg for all of their compassion and wonderful care.
