Nellie Ione Wolgast, 100, of Traverse City passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Bay Ridge Assisted Living Center in Traverse City.
Nellie was born on Thursday, October 4, 1917 to the late Willie and Lillie (Shannon) Collier on the family farm between Manton and Mesick. She attended Mesick Schools where she loved music and played in the high school band. Following her graduation from Mesick High School, Nellie lived and worked in Traverse City while attending the Lewis Chapin School of Business of Traverse City.
On Wednesday, March 18, 1942, Nellie married Richard Herman Wolgast at the family farm where she had been born. After she and Richard were married, they lived in Traverse City, then Cadillac, Kalkaska, Traverse City and Saginaw until finally returning permanently to Traverse City. Early in her career, Nellie was an executive secretary at Michigan Public Service and then Consumers Power Company. After she and her husband returned to Traverse City from Saginaw, she was a paralegal at Running, Wise and Wilson for many years; was a life long member of the Eastern Star and long time and active member of Central United Methodist Church. She also was active in the Consumers Power Retirees group. Nellie liked to cook, sew, do all kinds of puzzles, garden, walk, attend the exercise program at NMC and enjoyed music. Nellie loved spending time with her family and friends.
Nellie is survived by her daughter Linda and husband Jim and their family; sister-in-law Bernice Collier and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as her siblings Clarence Collier, Grace Lund, Don Collier, Carl Collier, Ella Randall and Jean Buel. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Bay Ridge Assisted Living staff for the wonderful care and friendship they provided Nellie.
No formal services are planned and interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
