Olive Ann (Des Jardins) McGuire passed away August 3, 2015 at Orchard Creek.
Olive Ann was born January 15, 1918 in Marquette, Michigan to Wilfred and Alma (Plate) Des Jardins. She was a graduate of Northern Michigan University where she was president of her sorority, and graduated in 1939 with a degree in education. She taught home economics in both the upper and lower peninsulas. Her family benefited greatly from her skills as a gifted seamstress and cook. She married her college sweetheart, Edwin Vertin McGuire, on February 1, 1943 and together they raised four children.
Olive Ann was an avid gardener and beautified her homes in Dearborn, Ann Arbor, and Kewadin with her efforts. Olive Ann was an active member of the Catholic Church, president of the Altar Society at St. Francis of Assisi in Ann Arbor and a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Elk Rapids. Her organizational skills were put to good use when she traveled the state as an employee of the University Of Michigan Conference Department. She loved to travel and visited many states and countries, but her heart was reserved for her beautiful home state, especially the Upper Peninsula. She loved to share memories of happy childhood days on Lake Superior and instilled in her family a great appreciation for the beauty around them. She kept her far flung family close with weekly typewritten letters. She was a talented watercolorist, and her many correspondents treasured her annual hand painted Christmas cards. Her artwork was featured in pamphlets and posters for the Elk Rapids Garden Club. She was also a longtime volunteer at Munson Medical Center. Olive Ann will be dearly remembered for her devotion to family, domestic talents, gracious correspondence, and for finding the beauty in everyday life.
She is survived by her children Ann (Gerald) Craig, Thomas (Sally) McGuire, Kathleen (Daniel) Marks, and Daniel (Barbara) McGuire, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and sister, Marigene Richardson.
A Memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated on August 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Robert J. Zuchowski presiding.
Olive Ann will be laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.
Memorial contributions in memory of Olive Ann may be directed to the Elk Rapids Community Cupboard.
