Opal Stachnik

February 14, 1934 — November 19, 2012

Opal Stachnik, 78, longtime resident of Maple City and Leelanau County passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 at her home with family by her side.

Opal was born on February 14, 1934 to the late Fred and Cora (Walden) Van Horn in Farmer, OH. Opal was the youngest of six children to join the family. At a young age Opal's mother died and she moved to Northern Michigan and began her life here under the care of her older siblings. She was a graduate of Maple City High School and eventually returned to the school system, working as a teacher's aide with Glen Lake Community Schools for many years. Opal retired from the schools in 1994. In 1952 she entered into marriage with Donald Gene Stachnik at the Maple City Community Church.

Opal could often be found having fun over a hand of cards with her card club or in an intense game skip-bo. She was a very talented artist and was able to express her talents through hand painting and stenciling many objects and rooms throughout her home. Opal spent time knitting and crocheting many blankets, hats and mittens that were a treasured gift for her family and friends. She was a proud mother and a caring grandmother that will be deeply missed.

Opal is survived by her loving family, Ron (Catrina) Stachnik of Beulah, MI, Donna (Wayne) Novak of Empire, MI, Renee (Gary) Childers of Lake Ann, MI, and daughter-in-law, Judy Stachnik, seven grandchildren, Kirsten, Christopher, Kyle, Laneah, Kellie, Lakaila, and Chase, one brother, Roy Van Horn of St. Cloud, FL, and many other loving family members and friends.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Don in 2004, one son, Robert "Bob" Stachnik in 2006, her siblings, Clarence, Raymond, Hazel and Vern as well as her parents.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Devon Herrell will officiate.

Grave-side committal services will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery.
