Orlin Larry Street

January 6, 1929 — July 14, 2015

Orlin Lawrence (Larry) Street of Traverse City, Michigan, was born on January 6, 1929, the son of
Orvin and Gladys (Fisher) Street. Orlin was raised on a farm near Ithaca, Michigan. He went to Ithaca High School where he played most sports. In 1946, he was a member of the championship football team.

In 1948, Orlin married Emmalee Clawson, the daughter of Clayton and Alta Clawson. Soon, Orlin
and Emmalee bought a farm where Orlin began farming, and they started their family which grew to include five children. In 1952, they moved to Lansing where Orlin worked for Oldsmobile Corp. as Plant Protection Officer. Orlin enlisted in the Michigan State Police in 1957. During a span of 30 years, his assignments were Rockford (1957-1962), Cadillac (1962-1966), Bridgeport (1966-1968), Traverse City (1968-1970), Marquette (1970-1974), Wakefield Post Commander (1974-1979), and Traverse City Post Commander (1979-1987), where he then retired.

Orlin attended Northern Michigan University. During his career, he taught Criminal Justice at
Gogebic College. He has been a member of the Traverse City Rotary, Northwestern Fair Association, Traverse City Masonic Lodge, Past President Hi-Twelve U.S. Trotting Association, and Michigan Harness Horseman Association. In 1983-1984, Orlin served as District 9 Grand Traverse County Commissioner. Later, he served as Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for Long Lake Township.

Upon retiring, Orlin, Emmalee, and their son, Larry, started racing and training Standardbred
sulky horses. For Orlin and Emmalee, racing horses at fairs and pari-mutual tracks was a hobby which eventually turned into a business. Orlin's favorite horse was "K.Z. Sheri" which he drove and became 1989 Three Old Filly Trotting Champion of Michigan. In 1989, the filly won 12 out of 13 races. Several horses named "T.C. Express", "Spring Fancy", and "T.C. Thunder" were notable in racing circles, winning at Futurities and Stakes, Mich., Wolverine, Mich. Breeders and Mich. Pari-Mutual. Orlin had several other hobbies, including beekeeping, hunting with his sons and grandchildren in South Dakota, and making furniture including grandfather clocks for his daughters.

Orlin leaves a legacy of love and pride for his wife and five children. Orlin is survived by
Emmalee and sons, Larry (Nancy) Street, Michael (Mary Jo) Street, David (Peggy) Street, and daughters, Shirley (Dennis) Menhennick and Nancy Street. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Doug Street, Dennis (Tricia) Menhennick, Jr., Lisa (John) Gibson, Adam (Erin) Menhennick, Christopher (Nicole) Street, Andrew (Melissa) Street, Justin (Susan) Street), Emmalee (Jeff) Patterson, Benjamin Street, Amanda Street, Jacob Griffin, Kristal Griffin, and 16 great-grandchildren.
