TRAVERSE CITY — Dr. Edward Phillip Schied, 76, of Traverse City and Lansing, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011.Ed was born March 25, 1935, in Detroit, to the late Edward L. and Aline (Gamin) Schied. He married the late Joanne M. Schied on June 28, 1958. Together they lovingly raised three children.Ed attended Albion College, played football and was a member of Sigma Chi. He then transferred to the University of Michigan and graduated from U of M's Dental School in 1958. He was a dentist for more than 46 years. During that time he served as the Secretary of the Resort District Dental Society, was one of the first chairside instructors at Northwestern Michigan College, taught for more than 25 years in the Dental Assistant Program and also served as a Claims Consultant for Delta Dental Plan of Michigan.In the community, Ed was a dedicated member of Traverse City Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish serving as an usher and choir member. He also was a member of Kiwanis International and a sports enthusiast with a passion for University of Michigan football.Surviving Ed are his children, Suzanne (Dennis) Benjamin, of Lansing, Phillip (Carol) Schied, of Ellicott City, Md., and John (Deborah) Schied, of Fenton; grandchildren Sarah, Scott and Zachary Benjamin, Hannah and Jack Schied; sister-in-law Bernadette Schied, of Annapolis, Md.; and several, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Ed is preceded in death by his parents, brother and wife Joanne.Visitation will be held for Ed on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a rosary held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with a visitation held one hour prior. Internment will take place at a later time at Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.Memorial contributions can be directed to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation.The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
