Paul William Alpers Jr., 90, of Traverse City passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Tendercare of Traverse City. Born February 25, 1926 on Horn Rd. in Leelanau County, it was said to be the coldest day for years. The doctor came to the house in a one horse open sleigh.
He attended St. Francis in Traverse City where he played saxophone and basketball. Paul honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University. Paul was a business man for over 50 years, working for General Mills, American Greeting Cards, owner of Maria's Pizzeria in Traverse City, and the Osh Gosh store at Logan's Landing.
Paul loved to sing, "Old Man River" (was his favorite), play shuffleboard ( many championships), ping-pong he would best any comers, dance, cards, and winter in Fort Myers, Florida.
Paul is survived by his first wife and children; Paula (Don) Lewis, Angela (Frank) Alfonso, Larry Alpers, Lori (Tim) James and Ludwig Alpers. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and his second wife, Wilma Lautner Black Alpers.
He was preceded in death by a son, Fulton James. Family deceased members include his parents Paul and Mary (Plamondon) Alpers, Sr. and siblings; Dora (Fromholtz), Robert "Bud", Leonard and Kenneth.
A memorial will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lake Leelanau.
