Obituary

CENTERVILLE TOWNSHIP — Centerville Township resident, Paul Davis, died June 11, 2011, at Cherry Hill Haven in Traverse City. He was 94. Paul was born in Kalamazoo on April 17, 1917, the son of Marie Gurd Spray. On May 7, 1938, he married Evelyn VanderSlik, who preceded him in death in 2005 after 67 years of marriage.During World War II, Paul was employed at the Kalamazoo Stove Co. and later at The Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co., retiring after 25 years at the age of 56. Paul and Evelyn raised their family in the Kalamazoo area; Leelanau County was frequently their vacation destination. Centerville Township property was purchased with retirement in mind and became their home in 1973; they chose the Leelanau Peninsula for its beauty and pace of life. He enjoyed gardening and fishing, and was an avid reader of Thoreau's writings. A member of the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church, he was active in the Cedar Chamber of Commerce and served as the Centerville Township Zoning Administrator for several years.Paul is survived by his children, Edward L. (Marilyn McCarter) Davis and Janet (Lee) Seguin, both of Portage; brother-in-law, Julius VanderSlik, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; sister-in-law, Eleanor VanderLinde, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church, 1200 Ramsdell, Traverse City, MI 49684. Graveside services and burial will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Solon Township Cemetery.
