Traverse City – Margaret "Peg" Gatzke of Traverse City left us on December 8, 2012 at Bay Ridge Assisted Living.
Peg was born in Watertown on June 8, 1921 to Francis and Blanche (Henry) Currant. On November 26, 1976, she was united in Marriage in Traverse City at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church to Raymond F. Gatzke.
Peg was a registered Dietitian, graduating from Michigan State University in East Lansing. She worked as assistant dietitian at Lapeer State Home and Training School, transferring to Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital as Head Dietitian in May of 1951. At the time of her retirement she was Domestic Service Manager responsible for the housekeeping, laundry, and dietary departments. Peg was a member of the American Dietetic Association, Michigan Dietetic Association and State Employee Retiree Association. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where she ushered and worked in the food pantry with her husband Ray for many years.
Peg enjoyed all kinds of card games, all outdoor activities, reading, dancing, as well as cooking and baking for her family and friends.
Peg is survived by her daughter Geralyn (Kevin) Rice of Traverse City, son Mark (Marge) Gatzke, daughters Colleen (Richard) Tallent and Shally (Leo) Mauk, four granddaughters Kim, Jenna, Heidi Gatzke and Holly (Nate) Glidden from Traverse City, four great grandchildren Andrew Gatzke, Holden Steinebach, Gabriel and Lilian Glidden all from Traverse City, "adoptive children" Victor (Juanita) Cole, Jean (Harold) Nelson and Ruth Stibitz all of Traverse City, and Sandra Hutchins from Pittsburgh, PA.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Raymond F. Gatzke and Milton Zahnow, her sister Helen Cole and adopted son Victor Cole.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 11:00 am with visitation beginning at 10:30 am. Rev. Fr. James Hayden will serve as Celebrant. Interment will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorial contributions in memory of Peg may be directed to the Immaculate Conception Church Food Pantry, for mass intentions or to the Salvation Army.
