Traverse City - Penny Lynn Belfry, 55, of Traverse City passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Penny was born on Sunday, June 16, 1957 to Harold Oliver and Rosemary Herrick Hull. She graduated from Bath High School in 1975, where she had been a state record holder in track and was serious basketball player. On Saturday, June 12, 1976, she married V. Joseph Belfry in East Lansing at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
Penny enjoyed excercising and walking, a carry over from her high school sports days. She loved laying in the sun, reading her Bible daily during her quiet time, singing hymns with her guitar and ministering to female inmates through Forgotten Man Ministries. She enjoyed camping, could play a great game of poker, as well as enjoying thrift shopping. Penny had a wonderful and caring heart. Not only with Forgotten Man Ministries, but she worked for many years as a care giver, both at Orchard Creek Senior Living and at The Village of Bay Ridge, working at those facilities after her children were grown. An organized and detailed person, Penny will especially be remembered for her love for her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; her children, Joseph Christopher (Andrea) Belfry of Interlochen, Jennifer Lynn (T. J.) Craig and Jacob Timothy (Sara) Belfry, all of Traverse City; Jessica Hope (Steven) Goble of Harvest, AL; her beloved grandchildren, Bahle, Olivia, Jack, Sawyer, Lydia, Lillian, Lucas and Mary. Penny is also survived by her mom, Rosemary Vinson of Williamston, her siblings, David, Ruthie, Danny, Hal, Richard, Mary, Kris and Tim, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Penny was preceded in death by her father, her step father, Douglas Vinson and her niece, Amy.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 1 from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2 at Bay Pointe Community Church, 6880 Secor Rd., Traverse City with Pastor Nick Twomey officiating. Private family graveside services will take place later at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Penny's memory be sent to Hospice of Michigan, who were so instrumental in her care.
