TRAVERSE CITY — Peter Wencel Sheffer, 78, lifelong resident of Cedar, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at Munson Medical Center. Pete was born on Dec. 4, 1931, to the late Peter and Barbara (Piette) Sheffer at home on the family farm on Lincoln Road in Solon Township.Pete served his country as a member of the United States Marines. In 1952 Pete entered into marriage with the former Nina Durga in Traverse City, a marriage spanning over 58 years. Pete was no stranger to hard work and from a young age started working with the concrete service, moving on to the Buick Garage and Parson's before finding work at Fitzpatrick Electric Supply. Pete's career with the electric company lasted 40 years until retirement when he was able to spend more time enjoying the outdoors. Pete would often spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing many of the inland lakes or going after trout in some of the area's rivers and creeks. Pete and Nina took advantage of the their time together camping and creating many memories with the family at their travel trailer near Empire. Pete's hard work, dedication and love for his family will be missed by many. Peter is survived by his wife, Nina Sheffer, of Cedar; two sons, Doug (Lauren) Sheffer, of Maple City, and Jeff (Jenny) Sheffer, of Cedar; his daughter, Debra Hilton, of South Boardman; two sisters, Dora Freeman and Georgia Rokos; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends.Peter was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. A memorial gathering will take place from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the VFW Cherryland Post #2780, with military honors to be provided by the post at 12:30 p.m.Memorial contributions may be directed to Cherryland VFW Post #2780 or the Cherryland Humane Society.
