TRAVERSE CITY — Philip Arthur Walters, 83, longtime resident and native of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.Philip was born on May 8, 2011, to the late Herman and Barbara (Linguar) in Traverse City. In April of 1929, the family bought a farm near Suttons Bay. Philip attended the Valley School.He served as a Private First Class during World War II. He spent most of his time after the service working for various truck driving companies, such as Parker Motor Freight, Wolverine Express and others. He retired from trucking in 1985. He and Dorothy spent many winters traveling in their fifth wheel, making many friends along the way. Philip was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over 60 years, serving as usher for many of those years. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1213 and part of the K of C Honor Guard. He was an avid fisherman; one of his greatest accomplishments was spearing a 58-inch, 49-pound,10-ounce, musky in Elk Lake. He also loved playing cards.Philip is survived by his children, Donna (Gary) Mason, Eva (Bill) Welsh, Arlene (Dick) Miller, Marie Walters and Sandra (Dan) Davis, Dale (Linda) Houdek, Linda (Lynn) Dunham, Denise Houdek (Todd Raven) and Sally (Doug) Elliott; former daughter-in-law, Michelle Walters; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Emil (Glenna) Walters, Ben (Darlene) Walters, Arthur (Pat) Walters and Patrick (Myra) Walters; his sister, Leona (Howard) Kalchik; and many other loving family members and friends.Philip was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; second wife, Dorothy; daughter, Geraldine; son, Dennis; brothers, Peter, Al, Firmin and Don Walters; as well as his father and mother. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 26, 2011, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony Citro officiating. Graveside committal services will be held in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens at a later date.
