Randal J. Agruda, 56, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Randy was born on August 12, 1958, in Traverse City, to Irineo and Veronica (Linske) Agruda. He grew up in Traverse City, and graduated from Traverse City Senior High School in 1976.
His greatest passion was the fire service, and he had over 20 years of firefighting experience. He accomplished many great things at Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, including being a Lieutenant at Station 8 for several years. Randy played an instrumental role in starting the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program and most recently, had accepted a position as the Fire and Life Safety Public Educator with Grand Traverse Metro. He was a great man who always had a smile on his face and could help lighten any situation just by his presence. He was always there for those when they needed advice or just someone to talk to. Randy was very outgoing and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved fishing, hunting and camping. Above all, spending time with his family and friends is what gave Randy his greatest joy. He will truly be missed.
Randy is survived a daughter, Jennifer (Ryan) Kuz, a son, Kyle (Kelsey) Agruda, one grandson, Memphis Agruda, and another grandchild on the way. Also surviving are his mother, Veronica Aeschliman, the mother of his children, former wife and friend, Janice Agruda, his brothers and sisters; Ernie (LaVonne) Agruda, Tina Agruda, Linda (Tom) Olney and Andy (Kathy) Agruda, as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his best friend, Al Martin.
Randy was preceded in death by his father, Irineo Agruda and step-father, Harold "Doc" Aeschliman.
Friends are welcome to visit with Randy's family on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
A funeral service honoring Randy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015 at New Hope Community Church, 5169 Bethesda Ct., Williamsburg, MI 49690, with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Tim Manzer will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department.
