Randy was the son of Robert and Patricia (Brandt) Smith. He was born in Orlando, FL, however spent his early childhood in Springfield, VA. In 1976, the family moved to Traverse City and in 1983, Randy graduated from Traverse City High School where he played on its inaugural varsity soccer team.
