Raymond Delano Herman, 91, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024, at The Villas at Traverse Point.
Ray was born on October 27, 1933, in Traverse City to the late Walter and Annabelle (Glazier) Herman. He attended Traverse City Central High School, graduating with the class of 1951. Shortly after, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, spending over a year stationed in Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., fate led him to a friend's wedding where he met the love of his life, Carolene Solem. They were married on September 29, 1962, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and spent over six decades together, lovingly raising their two children, Mike and Kim.
In 1968, Ray and Carolene purchased their first home in Acme, where they continued to live and create lasting memories as a family.
Ray dedicated more than 40 years working as a machinist at Cone Drive, where his skill and commitment were admired. During this time, he furthered his education, earning a real estate license from the University of Michigan, and explored a new avenue in real estate. In 1979, Ray fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing his grandfather's farm on Lake Leelanau, where he spent several years dabbling in cherry farming.
Ray's love for horses was evident, with a particular fondness for the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking and cheering on his favorite teams—the Detroit Lions and Tigers. He also had a deep appreciation for nature, having once enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years. In his later years, he found peace in simply observing birds, deer, and the beauty of the outdoors, especially on drives to Elk Rapids to soak in the sunshine and stunning sunsets.
Ray will be remembered as a quiet, strong-willed man who always made his feelings known when it mattered most. He faced life's challenges with a resilience that earned him admiration from everyone who knew him. His doctors affectionately referred to him as having "nine lives," always bouncing back stronger after health setbacks. Ray's determination was most evident following a stroke in 1991, which affected his right side. Despite this, he never let it hold him back, continuing to be a devoted husband and father.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 61 devoted years, Carolene, his children, Mike and Kim, his brother Sherwood Herman, special cousin Anita Walters, and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Walter "Wally" Herman, his sister in law's Clara Herman and Ramona Herman
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 3pm to celebrate Ray's life on Friday, October 18, 2024 with a visitation starting at 2pm. Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of one's choice. Kindly share thoughts and memoires with his family at
