Raymond Keith Saunby, 69 of Traverse City passed away on Friday, May 03, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.
Ray was born on May 2, 1944 in Lansing, MI to the late Marion George and Gladys (Umlor) Saunby. Proudly Ray was part of the class of 1962 from Traverse City Central High School. He married the love of his life Patricia Lee Meyer in Elmwood Township on February 8, 1964. Together they lovingly raised their son James.
Ray was a talented carpenter by trade. In 1982 he and Pat moved to Arizona to work in the booming Phoenix area. While they were there they enjoyed climbing Squaw peak, Superstition Mountains and the true beauty of the Arizona Desert. Upon return to the area in 1992 Ray went to work for Tower Automotive.
In the summers on Old Mission Peninsula he secretly enjoyed raking the Haserot beach early in the mornings. He also liked taking long walks on the peninsula and finding mushrooms only to share with his friends and neighbors.
Most importantly Ray was a true family man. He especially loved his grandchildren and would absolutely do anything for them. Fondly, he will be remembered for his tender heart and generous soul. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Surviving Ray is his wife Pat of 49 years, son James (Andrea) Saunby, grandchildren, Jason and Ashley Saunby, sisters, Sandra Saunby and Linda (Jim) McClew and brother and sister-in-law Ralph (Jeanette) Meyer, niece Elizabeth and many other special friends.
Since Ray became sick in March, he set goals each day with his wife Pat. However, the goals never went past his birthday on May 2. As each goal was accomplished he would say "We've done Good!" Per Ray's wishes, cremation will take place followed by a burial at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to his grandchildren's college fund. The family wishes to graciously thank Munson Hospice for all the special love and care they provided to Ray and his family during this difficult time.
