TRAVERSE CITY — Raymond Herbert Schroeder, 90, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at Bortz Health Care Facility on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. Ray was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Reed City, to the late Herbert A. and Emma (Franz) Schroeder and raised by his stepmother, Esther Schroeder. He met and married D. Elaine Rosencrans in Reed City in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1997. Ray honorably served our country in World War II from 1937 to 1942 as an Army Engineer. Ray worked many years for the Grand Rapids Herald/Press as the Northern Michigan Circulation Manager and retired in the early 1980s. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and also enjoyed bowling and fishing. Surviving Ray are his two children, James (Nancy) Schroeder, of Traverse City, and Kathy (Michael) Mullet, of Canton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jake Schroeder, Abby Schroeder, Andrew Mullet and Nathan Mullet; brother, Norman (Betty) Schroeder; sister, Luella Whitten, both of Midland; and companion of many years, Virginia Beitner. Ray was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Whitten.Many thanks are extended to special friend, Patti Brown and the staff at Bortz for providing care and comfort during these final days.Visitation will be held for Ray from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Pastor Robert Zagore will serve as officiant.
