Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Raymond Charles Sladek, 82, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born on March 21, 1928, to the late Charles and Agnes (Korb) Sladek in Traverse City. Having graduated from Traverse City schools, Ray went on to serve our country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Feb. 13, 1954, in Detroit, he married the former Bobbie J. Holley.Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bobbie; a son, Douglas (Jill Lenten) Sladek of Negaunee; daughters, Janine (Jon) Andrus of Old Mission, Cynthia (Chris) Rydahl of Cedar and Leslie Sladek of Empire; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Diane) Andrus of Parker, Colo., Adam Sladek of Covington, La., Ansley Sladek of Negaunee, Nichole Kohler of Eureka, Calif., Jacob Kohler of Empire, Holley Kohler of Maple City and Simon Kohler of Empire. Also surviving are his sisters, Barbara (Ray) Smewing of Traverse City and Shirley Kildee of Lansing. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Donald; and a grandson, Zachary Andrus. Ray began his working career as a baker at Carroll's Bakery, where he worked for 10 years. He then began his career at the U.S. Post Office in Traverse City, where he was a window clerk, retiring in 1988. He served on the credit committee of Members Credit Union and later as a member of the Board of Directors. Ray passionately loved to fish in Grand Traverse Bay, on the ice or from his boat. Playing cards was a fun pastime shared with family and friends. Many were fortunate to enjoy his excellent cooking and baking skills. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, but most of all he will be remembered for his love for his wife, children and grandchildren. Visitation for friends and family will be held today, June 18, from 5 until 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Father Anthony Citro presiding. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
