Rex Shugart, 92, of Bingham Township, passed away peacefully at home, under the care of his family and hospice.
Rex was born on June 12, 1930 to the late Oscar and Ladessa (Shreeve) on a dairy and cherry farm in Leelanau County. He was one of six boys.
In 1947 Rex graduated from Traverse City High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1948 during the Korean Conflict. After honorably serving his country, Rex was discharged and enrolled in Central Michigan University. After receiving his bachelors, he went on to obtain his masters from Syracuse University.
In 1958 he was employed by Lear Siegler in Grand Rapids, MI. Over his 37 year career with Lear Siegler he held various managerial roles.
In 1995 after retirement, he and wife Ione returned to Leelanau County and made Bingham Township their home. Rex spent his retirement loving his family time, do it yourself projects both at home and at the Keswick United Methodist Church, participating on the Bingham Township Tax Board, working to beautify and map the Bingham Cemetery and doing other acts of service for his community, family and friends.
Rex is survived by his children Steven R. (Shelly) Shugart and Diane Shugart, his special companion Florence, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Ione, his parents, his 5 brothers as well as many other extended family members.
Cremation has been performed. Interment in Bingham Cemetery and a Celebration of Rex's life will be held by immediate family at a future date.
