TRAVERSE CITY — Richard DeBruyn, 85, of Traverse City, died peacefully at his home Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, with the family who adored him by his side.Dick was born July 21, 1925, in River Grove, Ill., the son of Arie and Jennie DeBruyn. He spent his youth in the Sparta and Coopersville area of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army 9th Division during World War II, from 1944 until 1946. On July 28, 1950, he married Joyce Deters, at which time they moved to Traverse City.Dick, along with his brother Arie, owned DeBruyn Concrete Products Co. in Traverse City. He was a charter member of Faith Reformed Church, where he served in many different capacities through the years.Dick is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Cheryl (Dale) Kloosterman, Joan (Randy) Burgess and Barbara (Michael) Aja, all of Traverse City; his grandchildren: Kelly (Kevin) DeBruyn, Kevin (Jennifer) Kloosterman, Amy Kloosterman, Benjamin (Kristen) Burgess, Joseph (Graceyn) Burgess, Christopher Burgess, Jessica (Michael) Filicicchia and Nicholas Aja; and great-grandchildren, Molly, Adrian and Anika DeBruyn, Kelvin and Kallie Kloosterman and Owen Burgess. He is also survived by his brothers, Arie (Roanne) DeBruyn, Adrian DeBruyn; and sister, Ann Westfield.Dick was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia; parents, Arie and Jennie DeBruyn; and his brother, Andrew.Dick was a humble man, a mentor, an influential and essential part of many lives. He had a contagious, positive joy that drew many people to him, and he offered his deep and gentle wisdom generously. Of all of Dick's qualities, those closest to him spoke of his strength. Dick knew the source of his strength was his Lord, Jesus Christ. Dick was the cornerstone of faith for his entire family. He modeled and led a Christ-centered life and was a reflection of Christ to others. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." II Timothy 4:7.Dick had a very strong commitment and love for his family. His grandchildren loved spending time with him and knew, according to one of Dick's favorite sayings, "If you want to be where the action is, stick with me." His family and friends have many wonderful memories of boating, kiting and parasailing on West Bay, snowmobiling, extreme tubing, and backyard pool parties.Visitation for Dick will take place this evening, Dec. 14, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Faith Reformed Church, with his son-in-law, Randy Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the Mission Fund of Faith Reformed Church (please make checks payable to the church).
