Obituary

Richard Edward Dewling, 88, of Bear Lake passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 5, 2025.
Dick was born on July 24, 1936 in Glen Falls, New York to the late Richard and Elizabeth (Moore) Dewling.
Dick excelled in sports and played on both the golf and football teams in high school at Walled Lake and in College at Eastern Michigan. He was proud to lead both his football and golf teams as captain and his love for the games only grew over time. In his younger years, he also was a life guard at Kensington Park in Detroit.
On June 23, 1962 he married the love of his life, Diane Darcus Stewart in Milford. Their love story was one for the movies. He knew right away and asked her to marry him after just two weeks. Although it took her a few more times to say yes, the two were married less than a year later. When you know, you know!
Dick was a beloved teacher, principal and athletic director in Lake Fenton for nearly 25 years. While in Fenton he also coached the high school football team. Following his retirement, he earned his PGA Club Pro Card and worked at Oak Point in Brighton and Tyronne Hills in Fenton. He was a lifetime PGA member, board member of the Florida Golf League and 4-time club champion at Deer Creek in Davenport, Florida. He was also lucky enough to have 11 hole in ones!
Dick will be remembered for his love for his family, his love for golf, football, U of M and Detroit sports teams. Go Lions!
Dick is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Diane; their children Darcus "Darcy" and Rick; brother Jim (Marlene); Niece Ashley and nephew Jimmy (Kelly); and beloved granddog Cooper and tolerated grandcat Porcia.
The memorial service celebrating his life will take place on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 1 pm with visitation beginning at 12 noon. A luncheon will follow. In his honor, please wear your Lions gear.
Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, Munson Hospice of Cadillac or to the Manistee Humane Society.
