Richard Gene Merrick passed away April 15, 2024, after a short illness. Richard Merrick, "Richie" to family, "Chard" to his many friends was the son of Clifford and Margaret Merrick. Chard was born June 28, 1954, at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan. He is survived by his sister Nancy Kay Olson (Ron) of Phoenix, Arizona, brother James William Merrick of Eustis, Florida, sister Betty Jean Broos of Phoenix, Arizona, sister Jo Ann Merrick (Mike Koryto) of Bellaire, Michigan, his step mother Sally Merrick of Kingsley, Michigan. Chard was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Arnold Broos and favorite sister-in-law Pat Merrick. Chard never married but he is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and special friends Rick Conley, Walt Kroupa and his dog Chester.

Chard graduated from Traverse City Senior High School in 1972 and Michigan State University in 1976. After college Chard started working for his father Clifford who was a State Farm Insurance agent in Traverse City for over fifty years. When his father retired Chard went to work for State Farm agent Mark Newhouse where he continued to work until his final illness.

Chard had many passions in life such as his Wizard of Oz collections; his music collections; marionette collections with which original plays were staged; collections of old movies with superstars of the 40's and 50's. Chard was the life of many parties with friends and family.

Cremation has taken place. There will be an Open House Visitation at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, April 25 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held in July. Memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society (Chard's choice) or charity of your choice.
