TRAVERSE CITY — Richard Almon "Dick" Green, 89, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully June 14, 2010, at Boardman Lake Glen - Brigadoon, surrounded by his loving family.Born April 25, 1921, in Lansing, he was the son of the late Almon and Mary (Domer) Green. In 1941, in Traverse City, he married the former Ethel Kroupa, who preceded him in death in 1976. A proud veteran, Dick was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force after serving during World War II. He attended Michigan State University and graduated from Ferris State University, School of Pharmacy in 1949. Dick and his wife, Ethel owned and operated The Prescription Shops in Traverse City for 27 years, one of which became Thompson Pharmacy and Medical after his retirement.Dick believed in sharing his time and talents with others through his memberships with Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Traverse City Exchange Club, Traverse City Elks Lodge #323 (life member), The American Legion Bowen - Holiday Post #35, Traverse City Golf and Country Club, The El Conquistador Golf and Country Club and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, both in Bradenton, Fla.He was an avid golfer, loved playing the organ and listening to all types of music. His greatest enjoyment was studying to further his education in his chosen profession of pharmacy.Dick will fondly be remembered for his gentle spirit and his unconditional love for his family. In 1977, he married the former Jane Clement Downer, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Carole (Greg) Thompson of Traverse City; three stepsons, James (Kathi) Downer, David (Sally) Downer and Douglas (Laurie) Downer, all of Traverse City; daughter-in-law, Mary Downer of Navato, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Lisa, Mark, Maria, Lynn, Kristina, Douglas, Jud, Abe, James and Danielle; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends.In addition to his first wife, Dick was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda; stepson, Roger; and his brother, Bernard.A Celebration of Life gathering will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday, June 19, 2010, from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance of Dick, memorials may be directed to the Food Pantry at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or to Munson Hospice. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
