Traverse City

Richard J. Kraemer, 84, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026.

Rich was born on March 5,1942 in Detroit to Joseph and Erma (Bennett) Kraemer. He grew up in East Jordan, Michigan, with his younger brother and sister, surrounded by many friends and family, including a score of cherished cousins. He loved school, and after graduating from East Jordan High School, he attended Central Michigan University with the intent of becoming a teacher.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree from CMU, plans changed. Instead of teaching, he accepted a position with the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission and worked as an Enforcement Officer for his entire career. Although he first served in the Detroit area, he transferred soon after to the Traverse City area after getting married and starting a family.

Rich would later go on to marry Susan DeYoung, and the two celebrated over 35 years of marriage together. They faithfully blended their two families: Rich’s daughter Rachel (Chance) Bunner, with Sue’s children; Christine (Michael) McMaster, Dennis (Courtney) DeYoung, and Elizabeth (Ben Rebant) Sterling. He was a devoted husband and father to the end. His abundant love and pride in his family was evident in the dozens of meticulously organized binders of photos and mementos from various events through the years.

Rich loved his wife, his kids and grandkids, and sailing…not always in that order. His passion for sailing on his boat Massé, then later Outrageous, would occupy much of his free time, alternating with billiards tournaments during the off-season. The friendships he created through these activities lasted well after he lost the ability to participate. All who knew him will miss his genuine humble nature, dry sense of humor, and sharp wit.

His most treasured title was “Grandpa”. Although he never officially became a teacher, he naturally personified this role with his grandkids, and for many other children from his community over the years. Rich’s enthusiasm to share various experiments, optical illusions, puzzles, projects, games, was obvious in his smile and patient demeanor. He jumped at any opportunity to spend time with his kids and grandkids, regardless of whether it was a fun activity, or coming to the rescue for any situation.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Erma Kraemer, and brother Louis Kraemer.

He is survived by his loving wife Susan; children Rachel, Christine, Dennis, and Elizabeth with their spouses and partners; grandchildren Logan (Ashley) Bunner, Hanna Price, Shaelyn Bunner, Jacob Price, Marin Bunner, Owen (Kate) Yoakum, Elliott Sterling, and Hazel Sterling; sister Joanne (Bud) Gee; sister-in-law Diane Kraemer; former wife Linda Veliquette; along with his beloved extended family, nieces, nephews, and many cherished cousins and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Central United Methodist Church, located at 222 Cass Street, Traverse City, MI. There will be a one-hour visitation beginning at Noon, with the memorial service beginning at 1:00pm followed by a luncheon.
