Obituary

Richard Gunnar Ostholm, 90, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026. Born in 1936 and raised in Detroit, Richard grew up with strong family bonds and a deep rooted work ethic that guided him throughout his life. A proud veteran, he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in California and trained K-9s—service he carried with pride long after his discharge. Following his military service, Richard built a long and rewarding career in the automotive industry, working in tool and die at both Ford and Chrysler. Known for his independence and free spirit, he embraced life on his own terms. A devoted Michigander through and through, Richard loved the outdoors. He found joy in fishing, snow skiing, and especially the open road. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he traveled extensively across the country on one of his beloved Harleys, savoring the sense of freedom each journey brought. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Eric G. Ostholm and Rose (Talick) Ostholm, and his brother, Charles J. Ostholm. He is survived by his sister, Shirley (Ostholm) Hinnau; his nephew, Charles E. Ostholm; his niece, Karen Ostholm Flynn; and his grandniece, Kinsey J. Lutz. He will be remembered as a man deeply devoted to his parents and proud of his service to his country. Richard took great pleasure in life’s simplest joys—shared family holidays, cold wintery days, fresh Michigan corn on the cob, a slice of Dutch apple pie, a winning slot machine, and an open road beneath his wheels. Kind and easygoing, with a laid-back sense of humor, Richard left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He will be missed.
