TRAVERSE CITY -- Richard Joseph Wenzel, 81, of Traverse City and formerly of Sterling Heights and Detroit, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Villa. Richard was born on February 20, 1942, to the late Michael Lucki and Anne (Krajenka) Wenzel in Detroit. Richard was raised and attended school on the northwest side, graduating from Cooley High School in Detroit. On December 1, 1962, Richard entered into marriage with the former Karen Franklin. They were married 60 years until his passing.

Richard made his living as a plumber, spanning a long career over 36 years, retiring in 2001. Richard maintained his membership for 58 years in the local Plumbers Union #98. Following retirement, Richard and Karen made the decision to move to Traverse City and began residing there permanently in 2009.

Richard enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren, and loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. Richard was a good father and will be missed by a caring family and as a respected figure by many within the community.

Richard is survived by his wife Karen (Franklin) Wenzel, daughter, Kim (James) Young of Clinton Township, sons Christopher R. Wenzel of Morrill, Nebraska, and Craig (Heather) Wenzel of Chesterfield Township; and five grandchildren, Danielle (Bobby) Young, Jason (Becca) Young, Lauren (Alex) Enfroy, Joshua (Lexi) Young and Jessica Wenzel; a great-granddaughter, Claire Young; sister, Eleanor Simpson, and many other loving family members and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Delores Leonetti and Elaine Carlson; and one brother, Paul Wenzel.
