Obituary

Robert L. Baynton

Traverse City – Robert L. Baynton, 95, of Traverse City passed away on December 29, 2025.

He was born on May 21, 1930 in Traverse City to the late Elmer and Johanna (Berg) Baynton. He is survived by his wife, Loretta (Conflitti) of 61 years; children Lauri (Jim) Gartner, Rick (Sharon) Baynton, Tom (Penny) Baynton, Marcia Sanders; special friend Virginia Carslon; sister Sharon (Charles) Varner and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis (William) Blanchard of Petosky and many relatives and dear friends.

As a father, Bob possessed a sense of playfulness telling his children stories, playing games and being supportive where he could. His own childhood was spent on the Berg Family Farm in Suttons Bay. It became a source of continued family history, stories and that continued playfulness.

Among his activities was a life long love of golfing. Both for the game as well as the friendships cultivated through the years including the last group; The Boys Of Summer. He was a collector of objects, large and small including fountain pens to roll top desks and Traverse City memorabilia with stories to go with them. A larger project was the restoration of the Barney residence and barn. It resulted in the home’s remaining existence. The barn became an antique shop called Devonshire and then an apartment and home for he and Loretta. During those years there were many treasures discovered including many friends.

In his parting shot he would want to putt out into the words of Walter Hagen, “Don’t hurry, don’t worry. Take time to smell the flowers”.

A celebration of Life will be held on May 30, between 2 – 5 pm at the Rolling Hills Antiques Barn, formerly known as Devonshire Antiques located at 5085 Barney Road, Traverse City, 49684.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan or to Traverse City Junior Golf Association.
