TRAVERSE CITY — Robert J. Keitchen, 84, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family. Bob was born on Saturday, June 19, 1926, to the late Russell D. and Evaline A. (Palen) Keitchen in Lansing. Following his graduation from high school, he honorably served his country in World War II on the U.S.S. Ordronaux. On Saturday, Aug. 16, 1947, Bob married the former Helen Beibrich in Lansing at Immanuel Lutheran Church. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bob utilized the GI Bill to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University.Harnessing his gift for communicating and connecting with people, Bob soon found his vocational passion in sales and marketing management. As a result, he enjoyed a successful career with IBM for 33 years. Those who knew him well, and even those who just met him, would say he would light up a room with his warmth and genuine interest in others. Bob also enjoyed his hobbies, woodworking, golf, boating and reading. He also had a love for horses, owning many throughout his lifetime.Bob is survived by his wife, Helen; by their children, Kathleen Lockhart, of Traverse City, Michael (Patricia) Keitchen, of Johns Creek, Ga., and Todd (Lou Ann) Keitchen, of Grand Ledge; his grandchildren, James (Cheryl) Lockhart, Casey Keitchen and Kaylee and Cody Keitchen. Bob was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Scott Lockhart. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church, where Bob was a member, with the Rev. Dale Ostema officiating. Burial of Bob's cremated remains will take place at a later time in Wacousta Cemetery in Wacousta.
