Robert "Bob" Lynn Buttleman, 77, of Traverse City passed away Friday, April 19, 2024 at home with his loving family at his side.

Bob was born on September 21, 1946 in Painesville, OH to the late Lynn and Mary (Hobson) Buttleman. He married Patricia "Trish" Anne Vandertuig on November 20, 1966 in New Era, MI. Together they lovingly raised five awesome children.

Bob was a cherished colleague, mentor, and founding figure of NMC Aviation. He joined NMC as a student in 1968, a flight instructor in 1970 and then became NMC Aviation's first official Director shortly afterward. Bob guided NMC Aviation as Director until he retired in 2006. A lifelong pilot, he served as an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, giving checkrides to thousands of pilots during his career. He also served as Director of the Airshow for the National Cherry Festival and took great pride in hosting the Blue Angels and USAF Thunderbirds.

He enjoyed spending time on the water (seaplanes and boats), attending his grandkids many sporting events, traveling with his wife, driving his Mustang convertibles, and flying various personal airplanes throughout his life. One of his favorite activities was talking with past students and excitedly listening to their accomplishments in aviation and life. He was a constant encourager and believer in the ability of anyone to chase their dreams.

Although a passionate aviator, his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was much loved by his wife Trish of 58 years, his children, Troy (Molly) Buttleman, Corbin (Leslie) Buttleman, Jason (Suzy) Buttleman, Tyler (Erica) Buttleman, Koren (Tyler) Sonneveldt, grandchildren Gabe, Logan, Reigan Luc, Hayden, Henrik, Naomi, Nora, Ruby, Elliott, Alex, Jack, Emma, and Annie, his sister Susan (Sam) Pellerito and many other loving family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life event is planned for Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 10am-Noon at the Northwestern Michigan College Aviation Hangar (2550 Aero Park Dr. Traverse City, MI 49686).
