Robert Edward McDermott, 94, of Traverse City died January 23, 2016 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City in the presence of his loving wife Dorothy and special niece Michelle Marrow.
Bob was born on October 27, 1921 in Bay City to John and Anistasia Block. When a young child, he was adopted by John and Catherine (Dockery) McDermott of Traverse City. He spent his childhood in Traverse City and then moved with his family to Chicago during the Great Depression years. He returned to Traverse City and graduated from Traverse City St. Francis High School in 1939. He then enlisted in the U. S. Navy in January of 1942 and spent six years on different ships, mostly in the central and southern Pacific. Bob came home in 1947 and was employed for 38 years with Tom's Food Markets, retiring in 1985.
On September 30, 1950, Bob entered into marriage with Dorothy May Mlujeak of Old Mission. They were married at St. Francis Catholic Church and spent 65 years together.
Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. When possible he took in homeless pets on their 40 acre farm. He was a member of VFW Post 2780 and the Buckley Old Engine Club.
Surviving Bob is his wife Dorothy and some extended family. He was preceded in death by his birth and adopted parents and his brothers Edward and Richard McDermott.
Visitation for Bob will begin at 12:30 pm Friday, Jan. 29 at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the funeral service beginning at 1:30 p.m., also at the funeral home. Deacon Tom Bousamra will officiate. Graveside services will take place at 3:00 PM Friday, May 20 at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with military rites at that time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions, The Cherryland Humane Society or A. C. Paws.
