RAPID CITY — Robert Staples Swindlehurst, age 83, of Rapid City, passed away Nov. 5, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born on Feb. 28, 1927, to the late Aubery and Eva (Marshall) Swindlehurst. Robert proudly served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines, and was a Medal of Honor recipient for his action in the South Pacific. Upon his return, he joined the U.S. Army to serve another two years. Robert worked as a railroad engineer in Traverse City for many years. He is survived by his loving daughter, Marjorie (Richard) Christian, of Wyoming, Mich.; grandson, Josiah Arocho; and his brother, Richard Swindlehurst. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Caroll (Rice); and three brothers, Donald, Russell and James. Robert will be laid to rest in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
