Romana Mae Herman

Romana Mae Herman, 82, of Traverse City passed away peacefully on Friday, September 10, 2021.
Romana was born on July 16, 1939 in Hannah, MI to the late Joseph and Lena (Schmuckal) Bauer. She attended school at St. Mary's of Hannah and continued her education at Northwestern Michigan College.
She began working at Traverse City Iron Works as a secretary and soon would meet Sherwood "Woody" Herman. After a year of dating and falling in love, they were married on May 10, 1961 in Newport News, VA after Woody was honorably discharged from the Army. Together they raised three wonderful children, Pam, Todd and Lynn.
After Lynn started school Romana went to work for over 24 years at Norris Elementary School as a lunch time aid. She enjoyed her time at the school and meeting the new children each year.
In her spare time she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, gardening and going to the casino.
Romana will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and friend whose bright smile was always present when she greeted you. Her gentle and loving soul will be missed by many.
Romana is survived by her beloved husband Sherwood J. "Woody" Herman of over 60 wonderful years. Their children, Pam (Michael) Steffes, Todd (Laura) Herman, Lynn (fiancé Tracy Egeler) Herman, step-grandchildren, Clarissa (Brenden Beger) Fasel, Hannah Fasel, great-grandson Waylon, brother John (Eva) Bauer, brothers-in-law Walter "Wally" Herman, Ray (Caroline) Herman, very special cousin-in-law Anita (Clifford "Bud") Walters, and many other loving family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy (Max) Elliott, Wilma (Maynard) Elliott, brother Richard (Betty) Bauer, and sister-in-law Clara Herman.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Fr. James Hayden will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leelanau Land Conversancy.
