Ronald Emerson Butcher, 94, of Traverse City, passed away at home on May 1, 2026.
Ron was born on August 2, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Ralph and Mildred (Gallup) Bashal. He later took the name Butcher when his mother married Adam Butcher. He graduated Bentley High School in Livonia as part of the first graduating class in 1950, before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force with the 407th Air Police Squadron during the Korean War, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, Ron attended the police academy, later graduating from the FBI Academy in 1970 while dedicating his career to the City of Livonia, where he served as both an undercover detective and motorcycle officer until his retirement at the age of 55.
Ron married Carol Muncie, whom he met while they were both working for the City of Livonia. Their friendship grew into a lasting love, and in 1995 they moved to Traverse City to enjoy their retirement together. One of Ron’s greatest pleasures was seeing his sailboat in West Grand Traverse Bay out his front window.
Ron had a deep passion for sailing. Ron relished long sailing adventures, often traveling to Florida and exploring the Great Lakes. Along the way, many friends joined him, sharing his love of the water.
A true enthusiast in many ways, Ron was an avid cook, teaching his children the importance of a prime cut of meat and a good glass of wine. Ron was a classic car hobbyist who enjoyed tinkering with his Model A, and an avid motorcycle rider. He was well known around the Old Mission Peninsula, where he frequented local taverns, sharing his colorful stories and unique expressions.
Carol passed away in 2018, and Ron missed her deeply every day.
He is survived by his children, David Muncie and Sarah (Pete) Ministrelli; his grandchildren, Rachael Muncie, Lauren (Andrew) Franko, Matt, Amelia, and Brennan Ministrelli; his siblings, Anita and Dale; and his dear friend, Gerry Neubecker.
In addition to his wife, Carol, Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his sibling, Lee “Skip” Butcher and his son, Joe Butcher.
A funeral mass followed by a graveside service with full military honors will be held July 15, where Ron will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to one of Ron’s favorite charities: Boy’s Town USA, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, or Wounded Warrior Project.
