Ross A. Smith, 57, of Traverse City passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2025 at Munson Medical Center. He was supported through his passing with his son Zach and his very good friend Rose by his side.
Known to friends and family as Tony, he was welcomed into this world on September 19, 1968. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, he was adopted by Bill and Gerry (Courtad) Smith while stationed in New Zealand with the US Air Force. The family moved back to Traverse City as Tony started grade school where he enjoyed a large family of many aunts, uncles and cousins to go along with his sister Lori, and brothers Dan and Mike.
Tony attended Traverse City Central High School. He later worked in the construction industry doing golf course redesign and general carpentry. He had excellent carpentry skills, to which his brother Dan still attributes the many lessons and attention to quality that Tony taught him. He enjoyed the outdoors, nature, hiking, as well as most things thrill seeking.
Tony had a huge heart, a vibrant spirit, and a warm smile. He made friends easily, never meeting a stranger. He was always eager to support and help his friends and others in need, contributing his talents where he could, even as a good listener. He loved his children and his family.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents.
Tony is survived by his children, Zach Dell and Emily Smith (grandchildren Isabella, Daniel, Abigail, Johnathon and Cruzito); brothers Mike (Patti) Smith and Dan Smith, sister Lori (Robert) Mohler, and 5 nieces and nephews.
The family will celebrate his life in 2026. Memorial contributions may be directed to Northwest Michigan Supportive Housing or The Father Fred Foundation. Please visit
