Russell Warren Casselman

April 9, 1956 — September 1, 2025

Russell "Russ" Warren Casselman, 69, of Buckley passed away Monday, September 1, 2025 with his loving family at his side.

Russ was born on April 9, 1956 in Flint, MI to the late Russell Henry and LaVonne Marie (Beckner) Casselman. He graduated from Clio High School. Following high school, he went to Mott Community College and eventually Northwestern Michigan College studying Criminal Justice. He married the love of his life, Anita Ann Yanska on September 17, 1983 at St. Mary's Hannah Church. Together they lovingly raised two wonderful children Caleb and Hannah.

Russ lived a life of service, family, and joy. He began his law enforcement career at the Village of Mesick before working at Kalkaska County Sheriff's Department. He was a proud member of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department starting in 1979 where he rose to the rank of Captain in 1993 before his first retirement in 2002. After retiring from law enforcement, Russ worked at the Village of Kingsley as a Zoning Administrator and as an Assessor for Grand Traverse County Equalization Department. His career was marked by dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to his community. He was an active member at St. Mary's Hannah school and parish. Russ also served on the Grant Township Zoning Board of Appeals.
Beyond his work, Russ was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was always present for his children, coaching basketball, and supporting their interests and activities. He loved making interactive games, especially with his grandchildren, sharing laughter, and giving the gift of his time.

Russ's passions were many. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, tennis, and woodworking. A lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, he never missed a game. He cherished his property in Canada, where he shared countless adventures with close friends. With Anita, he enjoyed winter trips to the southern states, spending quality time together during retirement.

Known for his quick wit and Seinfeld quotes, Russ brought humor to every gathering. He was happiest when he was with his family, watching his grandchild grow, and spending time with close friends.
Russ will be remembered as a kind, honest, present, and a faithful man who loved deeply and lived fully.

He will be profoundly missed by his wife Anita of 41 wonderful years, his children Caleb (Pepa) Casselman and Hannah (Brandon) Diebolt, his grandchildren, Gabrielle, Kellen and Scarlett, his siblings, William (Leslie) Casselman, Lynn (Rob) West, his father-in-law August Yanska, brother-in-laws Doug (Raye) Yanska, Daniel (Karrie) Yanska, and sister-in-law Linda (Paul) Marlow, many extended family members, and so many wonderful friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Lillian Yanska, and nephew Ryan Yanska.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Charles Klettner, MD and his staff for their many years of wonderful care.
