A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 16th at Glen Lake Community Church for Ruth Ann Oleson, 96, of Glen Arbor, who died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City. Visiting with family will begin at 12:30 pm and the memorial service will follow at 1:00 pm.
Ruth was born on Sunday, August 18, 1918 to the late Frederick and Grace (DeBest) Baker in Port Oneida. Ruth graduated from Traverse City High School in 1936 and then continued her education at the University of Michigan, earning her RN degree in 1939. She worked in the field of contagious disease until she returned home to marry her husband, Carl on Saturday January 8, 1944 in Traverse City, Michigan.
Ruth was co-owner of The Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor with her husband Carl for 44 years. She was a member of Glen Lake Community Church and a volunteer EMT for the Glen Arbor Fire Department. Ruth loved feeding the birds, taking walks, fishing and challenging her family to a game of cribbage. Most of all Ruth loved and treasured her family. She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth's legacy is one of love and acceptance.
Survivors include her children, Carl (Jackie) Oleson III, Sharon (Don) Shaw, Sandra Zemaitis and Candace Oleson; grandchildren, Kim (Greg) Guilbeau, Shannon (Alan) DuBose, Stephanie (Craig) Sapolsky, Richard (Tammy ) Zemaitis and her great grandsons, Ross, Max, Trey, Brandon and her great granddaughter Harper. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, and a grandson, James C. Zemaitis.
A special "Thank You" to Hospice of Michigan, who helped during the final weeks of Ruth's life. The respect and encouragement given to Ruth and her family was appreciated.
Burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Empire will follow the memorial service.
