Obituary

Sarah Cameron, 95, was more than just a pretty face. The Scottish-born resident of Grawn, Michigan was arguably — pound for pound — the strongest, most energetic, playful, hard-working, quick-witted, athletically gifted, fiercely convicted, great-grandmother this side of the Atlantic.

But most of all, Sarah Cameron was adored.

She did almost nothing in life half way. Except when it came to drinking tea. Sarah was known for letting half-finished cups go cold as she worked around the house. True to form on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Sarah left behind a perfectly good half-cup to run off into the arms of God. And oh, how this woman could run.

Born Sarah Mellon McAulay, July 10, 1930 to Helen Crawford and William McAulay of Dumbarton, Scotland, young Sarah was much more a trouble-maker than her sweet Scottish accent would suggest. Her spirit was well-matched when she married a boy from the neighborhood, William "Bill" Cameron. After the birth of their only child, Helen, the family immigrated to Canada and later the States.

A former semi-professional sprinter in Scotland, Sarah later became a menace on the tennis court. She was skilled at crochet, a tenacious student of the Bible, and was known for making the world's healthiest soup… maybe too often.

Sarah was involved in building churches in Chiapas, Mexico for many years. She volunteered weekly at various charitable organizations, including her grand daughter's Traverse City-based non-profit, Single MOMM, where she is remembered as "Grandma Sarah."

In later years, Sarah enjoyed gardening and yoga and reading by the lake. Her fashion sense was extraordinary. She liked chocolate. She likely had several Hallmark movies memorized.

Sarah never stopped moving — skipping, dancing, running up stairs — in her 95 years on this earth. Walking back from the lake on her last day, Sarah turned to her daughter and made this noise all Scottish people make in disgust, and said, "I look like I'm an old woman, but I'm not!"

Sarah's surviving clan includes her daughter, Helen (Cameron) Tredway (spouse, Arthur John Tredway II); her grandchildren, Jennifer (Tredway) Finnegan Pool (spouse, Jonathan Robert Pool) and Christopher Tredway; her great-grandchildren, Marah (Pool) Pierson (spouse, Risten Jay Pierson) and Willam Cameron Finnegan (fiancé, Rachel Elizabeth Collins); and her sister, Janet (McAulay) Naylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; and her brother, William "Willie" McAulay.

Sarah will be laid to rest beside her husband at Flewelling Cemetery in Antrim County, Michigan, on October 13, with bagpipes playing. In lieu of flowers, make yourself a cup of tea and put your feet up.
