Sherman Allan Baarstad died January 13, 2016 at the age 83. He was born on the family farm in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on October 28, 1932. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, before joining the US Air Force in 1954. He returned and graduated from Concordia College in 1957. After a successful business career in manufacturing, warehousing and commercial development, he followed his dream and built Mistwood Golf Course in Lake Ann, Michigan in 1992.
Over the years his kind heart touched so many. He generously gave of his time to Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. He will be missed by all who knew him. He loved his family, friends and his constant companion, Trina.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gwen, and his sons, Steve (Becky) of Milwaukie, Oregon, Brett (Nadine) of Downers Grove, IL, David (Kathleen) of Maple City, MI, his daughters , Kristi (Steve) Sieck of Flemington, NJ and Tena (Brian) Elias of Orland Park, IL, his sisters, Kathryne Hoffland and Ann Ellingson, and 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Anna Baarstad, his stepfather, Leonard Mikkelson, his sister Marie and his brother David.
Visitation with the family will be at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah at 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 16. There will be a celebration of his life in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Multiple Myeloma Research Organization
