Sonia Jean Olson, born August 7th, 1936 passed away on November 30, 2023 at 87 years old in Traverse City, Michigan.
Sonia was born in Flint, Michigan to Thomas "Bud" G. H. Cocking and Elizabeth "Betty" Zitterkoph Cocking. She grew up on a farm and spoke German, teaching her grandparents English. Her educational drive brought her to Michigan State College (University), where she received her bachelor's degree in teaching and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. It was in college where she met her husband Wallace "Wally" Olson. Sonia and Wally were married on June 25th, 1960. Sonia taught school in both Flint and near their first home in Livonia before moving to Traverse City in 1968. Later Sonia became Office Manager at Century Vending working alongside Wally until they both retired.
Sonia always lovingly supported her children through swimming lessons in East Bay, dance classes, sporting events and a few trips to the hospital. Sonia was a pillar of the community. Along with her mother, Betty, she was an active member of Acme Women's Club, and Central United Methodist Church. She spent much of her time volunteering at the State Hospital, where she would bring homemade baked goods to patients. Together Sonia and Wally were active in the Mercedes Benz Club where she competed in timed events and brought home numerous trophies. The couple fully embraced Northern Michigan, enjoying snowmobiling with friends and boating in East Bay.
Sonia was a fierce advocate for women's rights, ecological conservation, and animal welfare. While she was known for her sharp wit and undeniable presence, she would also drop everything to help an injured animal or pet. She will be missed by her neighbors, her circle of snowbirds in Arizona, local friends and her loving family.
She is survived by her husband Wally, her children Eric (Kim) Olson, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Young-DuFort, and her grandchildren Spencer (Mary) Olson, Adam (Brooke) Olson, Rachel Young, and Catherine Young.
According to Sonia's wishes there will be a family service later this month followed by a celebration of life in the spring. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, Norther Michigan Office or the Cherryland Humane Society. The family would like to thank the wonderful people at French Manor Terra and Hospice of Michigan for the loving care they provided
