Gainesville, FLA-Sonya Yvonne Stanz, 57, of Maple City, Mi. and Alachua, Fla. died Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, following a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, John H. Stanz of Maple City; son, Zachary J. Stanz of Maple City; and sister, Ingrid K. Brey and brother-in-law, Michael P. Smith of Grosse Pointe Park, MI.
Born July 27, 1955, in Paris, France, she was the daughter of the late Albert Joseph and Bette Jo (Johnson) Brey. Sonya graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1977 earning a degree in Graphic Art. As a gifted graphic designer, she formerly owned and operated Glen Lake Graphics.
From a very young age, Sonya loved the world of horses. She became an accomplished equestrian rider and soon brought home many blue ribbons. She continued training and traveling to horse shows into adulthood.
Among the many wonderful memories of Sonya that will be cherished by her family and friends are the holiday celebrations she hosted at her home during the Christmas Season. But in particular, the love Sonya showed for her son Zachary and the sparkle in her eyes as she held him as a baby will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
