TRAVERSE CITY — Stanley A. Jenkinson, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Stanley was born on Thursday, Aug. 14, 1924, to the late Clayton and Marjorie (Runyan) Jenkinson in Springfield, Ohio. Graduating from Springfield High School, he then went to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Stan proudly served as a B-17 pilot during World War II. After the war, he returned to Ohio University to complete his college education and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. While at Ohio University, he became a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.While in college he met Elizabeth (Betty) Fisher, and they were married on Saturday, June 12, 1948. In 1950, he became employed for Cities Service Oil Company as an engineer, traveling the state of Michigan. They made their home in Bay City until he left the company in 1972, at which time they moved to Traverse City and bought the Waterland Motel. Together, he and Betty owned and operated that motel until 1978. They then purchased the Restwood Motel and operated it until 1986.Stan was an avid skier and served with the National Ski Patrol. He also loved fishing and had a boat at Clinch Park Marina for many years. He loved all sports, but his greatest love was for his B-17 that he called his "first wife." Stan enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Michigan Snowmobile Association and also held membership in the American Society of American Engineers.Stan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; and his daughters, Deborah Jenkinson and Diane Jenkinson, both of Traverse City. Also surviving are his sister, Carol Kilby, of Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.A memorial open house to celebrate Stan's life will take place on Friday, August 27, from 1 until 3 p.m., at The Elks Lodge, 625 Bay St., Traverse City.
