Obituary

Dr. Stephen N. Chapman, age 79, of Interlochen, Michigan (formerly of Chapel Hill, NC) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. Stephen was born on February 15, 1946 in Binghamton, NY to the late David and Barbara (Grow) Chapman.

Stephen was born the youngest of three children. He attended high school in Gouverneur, NY and was a 1968 graduate of the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he was a beloved member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He later received two Master's Degrees, including an MBA at the University of Michigan. In 1986, he received his PhD from Michigan State University in Business.

Stephen was a member of the ROTC program while at U of M and later served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He married the love of his life, Jeannine (Horton) on August 11, 1973.

He spent the majority of his career in education, teaching business at Eastern Michigan University, University of Iowa, University of North Carolina, Duke University, UNC Greensboro, and North Carolina State University. He was a consultant for many companies and was a published author of business textbooks, used in university classrooms globally.

In his free time, Stephen enjoyed spending time by the water at his lake home. He enjoyed biking, traveling, fishing, kayaking, watching U of M football, singing in the Benzie Community Chorus and Cherry Capital Men's Chorus, and spending time with beloved family and friends. He was an avid volunteer as a member of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church of Beulah and other organizations. He valued his membership in Michigan Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the Traverse City VFW.

Stephen was a kind man who was always willing to help others. He loved puns and making people laugh, and enjoyed gathering with friends and family at the lake.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Jeannine Chapman; son David Chapman; daughter Elizabeth Chapman (Margaret); granddog Ruby; sister Nancy Chapman Adams; brother Michael (Kathy) Chapman; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Chapman, and Barbara Grow Chapman.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Munson Cardiology, Munson Cancer Center, and Hospice of Michigan for their compassion for Stephen.
