Stephen Mcgarry

Stephen Layosa McGarry, 65, of Traverse City, passed away November 21, 2013. Stephen was born in Traverse City to his parents, the late John and Maxine (Fewins) McGarry.

Stephen attended and graduated from Traverse City Senior High School and attended Michigan State University. He married Joan Rajkovich and they had one daughter; Rebecca (McGarry) Venticinque. Stephen married Rose Mary Layosa, on August 21, 1998 and the couple lived in Traverse City.

Stephen owned and managed the Long Lake Grocery store for 32 years, and was respected and greatly admired by his friends and customers. He had a passion for all sports and especially enjoyed coaching his grandchildren's basketball and volleyball teams and spending time with them. He had a special fondness for animals of all kinds, and loved to work in the garden and grow giant sunflowers. He spent time in the kitchen and was known for making his favorite dish; macaroni and cheese while listening to his favorite tunes; blues and Cajun zydeco. Stephen loved to travel and his favorite family trip was to the Hawaiian Islands.

Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, a wife; Joan Rajkovich, a brother; James McGarry, and a sister; Kathy Forton.

He is survived by his wife; Rose Mary, daughter; Rebecca (Anthony) Venticinque of Traverse City, brother; Larry (Penny) Forton of Sheboygan WI., stepdaughter; Toni Mastrofini, of Traverse City, grandchildren; Paige McGarry-Costello, Hope McGarry-Costello, Wyatt McGarry-Costello, Luke McGarry-Costello, Aliza VanBroklin, Belle Venticinque, Lena Venticinque, Alex Venticinque of Traverse City, a sister-in-law; Etta Rajkovich, and Roland Costello, of Traverse City.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of ones choice.

Visitation is planned on November 25, 2013 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life for Stephen at 7:00pm.

Arrangements for the family have been entrusted to Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
