TRAVERSE CITY — Susan Lind Broutman Knott died peacefully and surrounded by family on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, following a long and well-fought battle with multiple myeloma cancer. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Knott, of Traverse City; children, Elizabeth Knott and Jonathan Knott; son-in-law, Michael Conti; and three sisters, Leslie True, Judy Tison and Amy Schultz. She will be remembered most for her endless love, ready smile, family devotion and for her belief in the divineness of all peoples.Susan was born June 12, 1949, in Ann Arbor, while her father was receiving his business school degree. Throughout her childhood, her family found homes across the United States from Marion, Va., to Lincoln, Neb., but she was always a Michigan girl at heart.Susan received her B.A. and M.A. from Western Michigan University. An elementary school teacher for 15 years, she was twice nominated as the "teacher of the year" in Grand Haven. She was also an active member of the Christ Community Church choir, and it was there she met and married Bruce Knott in 1980. Together they built a family of love and laughter which values music, education and kindness to others.Throughout her life, Susan remained involved with schools and was a constant supporter of the Arts, especially music. She was a regular crossword-puzzler, would always stay up an extra hour for one more game of Scrabble, and carved the cutest pumpkins in the neighborhood. Endlessly awed by northern Michigan's natural beauty, she loved getting her feet in Lake Michigan beach sand and was an indefatigable gardener who filled her home with plants and fresh air.She leaves behind a legacy of over 40 scrapbooks, a closet full of repaired Madrigal costumes, numerous gardens and a well-documented family history. Most important, Susan leaves us with a fuller knowledge of love, acceptance of others, and the memories of countless smiles.A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, with a visitation held one hour prior at The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, with Pastor Becky Chamberlain officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
